
History of the charities
The Whittington heritage charities date back to over 350 years ago with The Elizabeth Stephens Charity established in 1668 and The Fanny Clifton Charity established by Miss Clifton in 1888.
Elizabeth Stephens Charity
Elizabeth Stephens donation of £50 was used to build three cottages in Swinesherd. The cottages were sold in 1880 and the funds used to provide groceries for the local people in need.
Fanny Clifton Charity
In 1888 the Fanny Clifton Charity was established by Miss Clifton. Her donation of £900 was used to provide coal on St. Thomas’ Day (21st December) for those in need within the parish.
Elizabeth Stephens and Fanny Clifton Charity
In 2023, after a period of charity dormancy, a new group of Trustees made up of Whittington locals were appointed and committed to reinvigorating the charities to help support the local people of Whittington parish during the cost of living crisis.

In 2024 the two separate charities were formally merged sharing the same purpose to relieve financial hardship and support wellbeing. The trustees work closely with local groups and organisations, including Whittington Community Events Group,Whittington Community Hall, Whittington Church of England Primary School and Whittington Parish Council.
